About Dr. Mark Johnson

Dr. Mark Johnson is a fully-trained medical doctor and Board Certified Ophthalmologist. He provides comprehensive eye care and specialized surgery. He sees patients of all ages for annual exams and eyeglass prescriptions, and specializes in caring for eye disease. He has great expertise in providing care for vision and eye problems. This includes care of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eyes, blepharitis, retinal tears, eye tearing, uncomfortable eyes, eyelid problems, diabetic eye disease, and many other conditions.

Dr. Johnson is a highly-trained specialist and expert instructor in eye surgery.

Using the latest techniques including:

  • Lasers
  • No-stitch, small incision surgery.

Dr. Johnson welcomes new and established patients, and is available for both routine and emergency visits.

Dr. Johnson participates with most insurance plans and HMOs. On the day of your appointment, please bring the following items: your glasses, eyedrops, a list of your medical conditions and medications, insurance card, co-payment (due at time of appointment), referral forms (if applicable), and previous health records if available.

His practice is located at 811 Ridgewood Avenue in Venice. It has ample parking, and an on-site optician and eyeglass boutique. The office is modern, yet warm, with a dedicated staff constantly seeking ways to improve your care.

Dr. Mark Johnson's Background

Dr. Mark Johnson was raised in a large family on a farm near Spokane, Washington. That upbringing taught him the importance of hard work and caring for others. He believes the essence of medicine is caring- caring about and for each person. It is his conviction, and that of our entire staff, that we truly can change the world by helping people reach their best level of sight and well-being.

Dr. Johnson in performing surgeryDr. Mark Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Miami, in Florida. He was a Honors Program graduate, received Magna Cum Laude recognition, was elected to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society, and won many other honors.

He attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He was honored to be elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Academic Honor Society, which recognizes the top ten percent of graduates, and to be a Rhodes Scholarship nominee for the University. He completed his internship at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, where he was recognized as Intern of the Year. He had three years of specialized training in Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado in Denver. He was selected to be first Chief Resident during this time.

He was a commisioned officer for thirteen years, and served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He rose to the rank of Major. He was Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida. He served in the 31st and 56 Medical Wings, and the 11th Air Group. He provided professional support for MacDill's many specialized commands.

He has served as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida, where he was an expert instructor in eye surgery. His skill in eye surgery has been recognized by the American Board of Eye Surgery.

He has lived and practiced in Venice and Englewood since 1996. He has been married since 1984, and has three children. His interests include fishing, soccer, golf, computers, and literature.

Dr. Mark Johnson is a Board Certified specialist in the examination, treatment, and laser and surgical care of eye disease. This includes treatment of cataracts, dry eyes, diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, routine eye exams, contact lenses, eyeglass prescriptions, and the care of children as well. He is usually available for emergency as well as routine care.
